Snow Day!!

Not an official Snow Day of course, but that did not stop Ryan and Murphy from enjoying the snow.

My Worst Recipe Yet – Apple Cider Vinegar Water

I have been struggling with a cold, and I decided to peruse the internet for some home remedies so I could avoid taking medicine during the day.

A handful of websites suggested mixing apple cider vinegar and water and drinking it during the day to help when you are congested.

Well, I was desperate (very desperate), so I tried it.  I have to say it tastes horrible, but the taste is growing on me.  It kind of seems like really funky ginger ale.  But, more importantly I think it might be working.

Also, I just heard today that apple cider vinegar is supposed to help with weight loss – who new?

Has anyone else tried this? Any luck?

Another Reason to Give Up Store-Bought Bread

I know that I have said before that I was contemplating giving up store-bought bread – here and here.  While we haven’t actually fully implemented that goal, we definitely do not eat a ton of store-bought bread.


Today I found another reason to give up store-bought bread.  I tried homemade bagels, and they were delicious!  Much better than what I would typically get at the grocery store!!!

They definitely look homemade, and I need practice on getting them to stay together (although I found that sticking  a toothpick in to hold them together while you waited to boil the remaining bagels was actually quite effective).  But all that matters (in this house anyway) is taste.  My boys do not so much care for or understand presentation.


I started with this recipe.

Here is the recipe after I changed it:


  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1/2 cup honey


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (yes I really mean now and not in two hours)  As soon as the oven reaches the temperature turn it off).
  2. Combine 1 1/4 cup water, sugar, salt and yeast and let sit for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Add  flour and vegetable oil.
  4. Mix on low speed (I, of course, used by stand mixer) using the dough hook until well-developed, about 10-12 minutes.
  5. Pull the edge of the dough to see if it stretches.  If it breaks it is not ready yet so keep mixing with your dough hook. T
  6. Spray bowl with Pam, put dough in the bowl, and cover with a towel.
  7. Place bowl in warmed oven and let rise for 2 hours. I promise that this helps the dough rise much better, especially on a cold winter day.
  8. Preheat oven to 475.
  9. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  10. Bring water to boil in a large pot.
  11. Punch the dough down, place it on a lightly floured work surface, and use a knife to divide the dough into 8 pieces (these were plenty big).
  12. Roll each piece of dough about 8 inches long. Join the ends to form a circle.
  13. Let the bagels rest for 15 minutes.
  14. Add honey to boiling water.
  15. Boil the bagels, two at a time.  Boil for one minute and then turn over and boil for another minute.
  16. Remove the bagels and place them on parchment-lined baking sheet.
  17. Bake in the preheated oven until the bagels begin to brown, 15 to 20 minutes.

Mondays with Murphy – Owieeeeee!


Hi friends.  I am tired puppy today, because I had to have a procedure.  I broke a nail and it just wouldn’t heal, so Dad had to take me to the vet today.

I am not sure why other puppies dislike going to the vet.  I love going because it means that all these new people will pay attention to me.  I am not sure who I feel about the kittens in the waiting room though.  Also, now I get treats twice a day!!  I don’t know why mom insists on calling them medicine.

p.s. Doesn’t my new shoe look super cool?

Super Bowl Lasagna-Off – The Pictures

Today I decided to do something a little different for football Sunday.  Originally I had planned to make Chicken and Waffles for the game, and then Ryan informed me that the Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons are different teams.  My bad.

In honor of the competitive nature of the Super Bowl, I decided to challenge myself to a cook-off.  That’s right Lindsey v. Lindsey for the ultimate cooking victory – best meal of Super Bowl Sunday.  It is going to be a blood bath.

Well, maybe not.  It doesn’t hurt that the judges – Ryan and Murphy – are biased, and that I am the only cook.  Still, I am sure that when the winner is declared I will feel like a champion and talk smack (to myself)!

A Super Bowl Sized Cook-Off

Today we are trying something a little different for football Sunday.  We are having a cook-off!!

I asked Ryan if he wanted a feast of traditional football foods – wings, burgers, chili, pizza, brats, hot dogs, etc. – or if he wanted something like lasagna.  To my surprise he said lasagna.

Well, one cannot just make lasagna on football Sunday.  There must be more to it.  So I decided to make into into a Lasagna-Off!!  Pasitsio versus Traditional Lasagna!!!!

So fellow bloggers, I ask you two questions . . .Who will win the Superbowl? And who will win the Lasagna-Off?
